Over the weekend I did something I haven’t done in quite some time.
I spent my evenings playing WoW.
Not *just* playing WoW, but signing up in LFD as a tank as much as I could.
I actually had FUN!
There was only one wipage and that was because of (here’s a surprise!) a hunter who’s pet was on aggressive, and had growl on, along with his trigger happiness with pulling (which would have been fine if he was misdirecting to me, but he wasn’t!).
I got some nice shiny gear, but the main thing is I feel much more confident now as a tank, and like I can do it ‘long term’ once I’m 80.
Maxi is now 75 and rising… I think she may actually hit 80 in the next 2 weeks! It could be less if I spent all my free time on WoW, but I don’t think my boyfriend would be too happy at being left out while I’m gaming, lol!
So, now I’ve started looking at Kaliban’s Warrior loot list to see what I should be aiming for.
I never really used that site before and I’m glad I’ve had a proper look at it now, it’s pretty damn useful! Not only will it tell you what gear drops from which boss that is relevant to you while leveling, it also tells you what quests give you good rewards.
(Yes ok, so you all knew that… I’m a bit slow to catch on sometimes… it’s the baby brain. Really!)
(Also, did you know that a post of about 250 words takes this GamerMummy over 40 minutes to write during the day? Yeah… I wish it wasn’t true either! lol
)
(And on that note I’m finishing this post… later all!)

You’re braver than me – I’m slowly levelling a Pally tank (space goat flavour), but have only ever tanked Deadmines, on a guild-only run. Need more courage.

Well, I only just started tanking and that was at level 74, so you’ve got some time yet! It’s only now that I find the xp worth it to be honest, with the xp per level being so high, the group xp in dungeons etc with rested bonus means 4 dungeons = one level, on average!
I have never had any problem with tanking instances. Maybe because I have always rated them as being the places to learn the game rather than the main thing. Then again, I remember my angst over tanking in Heroics for the first few times because I knew they could be bad due to the ‘overgeared’ and over confident veteran dps doing their (mis)deeds. And quite honestly, I still remember the first ten or so heroics after which I felt horrible. I admit that there were a few of the excellent and exhilarating runs there, too, but the horrible experiences have caused the mess I’m in now.
I cannot get myself to even offer to tank in any raid.
I just cannot make myself to take on the possibility that the raid fails because I don’t know the encounter or the raid instance. And what chance is there for a raid virgin to break into raiding now, when the average call for a PUG raid is 5600 GS with at least 6/12 or even 11/12 kill achievements on ICC?!
Guild runs. Right. Guild happens to run at a hour which is very much unsuitable for me and I still think I couldn’t pull it with them. Not with their mains, even, let alone in the alt squad.
So… no LK kills for me until Cataclysm has hit and my tank is capped again. If then, as Illidan is still alive for my tank.
Cheers and congratulations on the newly found enthusiasm and excitement in the game!
And good runnings with your tanker. Everybody lives and bosses die, that’s the best a tank can hope for.
C out

I know I will never raid on any of my characters, as I just don’t have the time to build up the gear for that (especially, as you said, for a tank!), but I can still enjoy doing the most I can as a casual player!
Cheers Copra!
i just lvl’d a DK tank and am trying to gear her! it is very interesting to see things from the tank position since i am normally a healer. though i still think a bad healer can break a group before a bad tank can. on the other hand i find it easier to tank with a kid on my lap. i am not brave enough to tank a heroic with out my own guild healer (either hubby or one of the other over geared raid healers we have). i look forward to reading more of your posts as i am a raiding mommy that blogs about how my view of life is completely alteredby my wow life. keep writing! MD
I started out as a healer on my druid (back in the vanilla WoW when it was the ONLY viable druid spec!), and I did love it! Am thinking of speccing her for resto again as dps on my druid ain’t that great – the one downside of Balance being not so good when moving around so much!
I have no idea if I’ll be any good at the heroic tanking… probably not for a while, but I can still do regular dungeons at 80, so that’ll be my ‘thing’ once I hit 80… till I get to max defence at least.
try out tidy plates. it will help with those crazy multi-mob pulls. it helps. if you are running as tank now, then you will be fine and well geared for heroics! i started tanking heroics in greens! the first run started with “before you try to vote to kick me, the healer is my husband.”
LOL now that is an awesome line…
